NOT EVERYONE IN GERMANY IS thrilled by the prospect of Michael Ballack lifting the World Cup on July 9. Two miles south of Berlin, where 700,000 Germans were celebrating their team’s 3-0 victory over Ecuador in the shadow of the Brandenburg Gate, the men who live in Nollendorfplatz were going about their daily business.

The picturesque avenues around Motzstrasse are the centre of Berlin’s gay scene, but on Tuesday night they were as lively as the England defence.

Streets that should have been throbbing with 500,000 men partying and celebrating were almost deserted. The annual Gay Pride Parade that takes place at the end of June has been postponed — and the locals are not happy.

“The World Cup is very good for Germany, but not good for us,” Max, a 22-year-old student leaning against a black BMW outside the Hafen bar, said. “England are playing Sweden tonight? Really? I don’t know about football, but I know about David Beckham.”

The England captain’s star may be on the wane back home, but in certain parts of Berlin he will always be flavour of the month. “Ballack, Shevchenko and Ljungberg are very beautiful,” Max said. “But your boy is the best.”

Finding a bar that was showing Beckham and Co strutting their stuff against Sweden was harder than it sounds. Schöneberg is the place to go if you are looking for a tailor-made rubber suit or a leather face mask, but watching football was not on the cards. Televisions that should have been showing Joe Cole’s spectacular opening goal were flickering with erotic images of scantily clad men.

A five-minute walk away on the Kurfurstendammstrasse, the crowds had gathered in the capital’s main shopping street to celebrate their team’s victory and the riot police were watching the England match on televisions in the backs of their vans. In Schöneberg, men with mousta

men with moustaches were walking their poodles and shooting the breeze. “There are many bars that show the games, but not here — life is more than just football,” Max said. “Maybe try Tom’s or El Dorado.”

Tom’s Bar is one of Berlin’s most famous gay clubs and, according to my guide book, a visit to one of its notorious dark rooms is not for the faint-hearted. Tom’s was closed, it would open at 10pm — too late for me to catch any of the action — so it was El Dorado or bust.

El Dorado is not the kind of place where the average England fan on tour would choose to watch his team in action. Most supporters would probably feel more at home in an establishment that had a ladies’ toilet, but beggars cannot be choosers and the clock was ticking.

England score — silence. Sweden score — you could hear a pin drop. England score — someone turns up the Pet Shop Boys. Sweden score — I shift uncomfortably in my seat. Deep in injury time, a middle-aged man sits next to me and starts to play with my pen. I make my excuses and leave.
