MADCAP puppet Emu is making a TV comeback — with Rod Hull’s son.
.
The giant bird with the huge beak, which notoriously attacked Michael Parkinson, is getting his own show — an ITV sitcom for children.
.
In the 1970s Emu and Hull senior became a national institution with prime-time audiences of more than 11million.
.
But Hull grew to loathe the infamous bird.
.
He died in 1999 aged 63 after falling off the roof of his house while fixing the TV aerial.
.
His son Toby, 28, an actor, took over as the puppet’s sidekick and has appeared with Emu in pantomimes.
.
Emu will return in a 26-episode sitcom, aimed at six to 11-year-olds.
-
The series will be broadcast in 2007 and is made by the company behind Big Brother.
-
Executive producer Christopher Pilkington said: “Having worked with Rod Hull in the past it is a particular thrill and pleasure to be reacquainted with the extraordinary Emu.”
.
He added: “I am delighted to be working with Toby and Emu. Chat show hosts be warned — the beak is back.”
.
Rod, whose career begain in Australia, became a multi-millionaire thanks to Emu but went bankrupt in 1994.
