is true its best to put the bottle in the fridge after it's been opned? can it leak / make food smell of poppers?

You can even store poppers in the freezer.
In fact, freezing poppers is a good way to check the strength of different brands - the nitrite itself will not freeze, but any water it has been diluted with will.
